CREATING DRUG-AWARE COMMUNITIES

Leduc Representative -- Communities are stepping up their fight against
drugs and alcohol all across Alberta. And, the latest community to join in
the battle is the Town of Devon.

The Town of Devon, like Leduc, is looking to implement a drug strategy
team. This team would cover a range of activities intended to educate,
prevent and promote a drug-free community.

But to support the efforts being put forth by these communities, the
federal government needs to step up and take account for what is happening
in the justice system.

As Leduc RCMP Const. Chris Henderson pointed out, while federally and
provincially the number of police officers patrolling communities has
increased steadily, the judicial system isn't prosecuting to their full extent.

No methamphetamine user or dealer convicted under the law for drug
trafficking or use had actually received the maximum 10-year sentence.

Yet, on Aug. 11, 2005 the 10-year maximum sentence was increased to life in
prison.

While increasing enforcement and the sentence is welcomed, the courts need
to deliver the sentence.

Leduc RCMP general investigation and drug section Cpl. Steve Irwin told the
Rep in an interview in August 2005, "I've had users tell me they don't care
about the penalties. Traffickers are God to them and they don't worry about
the sentencing.

"They want their fix and they'll do anything to get it. They know the
courts are very lenient and lawyers tell them exactly what to say and do
(to get off the charges)."

Therefore, these stiffer penalties aren't going to help solve the growing
drug problem and a message needs to be sent out that these activities will
no longer be tolerated in any community.

The federal government needs to start pushing for maximum sentences and
join forces with all community members and groups.

Talk to your MLA and MP to get the message out that we are not going to let
the problem infest our youth and future anymore.
