DRUG SWEEP IS AIMED AT FEDERAL DOLLARS
LAKE COUNTY -- Sixty-four people were arrested this week in Lake
County as part of a sweep by law enforcement agencies to demonstrate
the need for federal money to combat drugs, Sheriff Gary Del Re said
Friday during a news conference.
In Operation Spring Cleaning, sheriff's deputies and state and local
police seized 15 grams of crack cocaine, 43 grams of cocaine, a
shotgun, two handguns, hallucinogenic mushrooms, heroin, marijuana
plants, $4,776 in cash and a sport-utility vehicle, said Keith
Frederick, deputy director of Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group.
Operation Spring Cleaning was part of a nationwide effort by law
enforcement to show the need for the federal government's funding of
Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance grants.
