HOLLY TOWNSHIP MULLS ORDINANCE FOR MEDICAL MARIJUANA DISPENSARIES
Holly Township has joined other local municipalities, including the
village of Holly, in discussing medical marijuana. In 2008, medical
marijuana became legal in the state of Michigan, but the new law left
a gap in how dispensaries can be legally operated.
The Board of Trustees discussed a possible medical marijuana
dispensary ordinance at its February meeting. After 45 minutes of
discussion, the board chose to table the issue, and come back next
month with more information.
"It's a preliminary discussion," said Supervisor Jesse Lambert. "This
is just the beginning of the process."
During public comment, Lambert said there were opinions expressed for
and against medical marijuana dispensaries in Holly Township.
"This is a social ordeal as well," said Lambert. "We want to make sure
we get it right."
Part of the research includes looking at ordinances from other
municipalities, including the village of Holly, and the cities of
Burton, and Walled Lake.
A new ordinance has not been drafted, and won't be approved at the
March meeting either, according to Lambert.
No one was appointed to draft an ordinance, but the township's
attorney, Gregory Need, will be present at the next meeting and the
board will discuss a possible ordinance with more research.
