EVENT TEEN ENLIGHTENED ON DRUG USE

Summer is around the bend and that's when youth have lots of time to hang
out and experiment.

Teen Power, an event next Friday at First United Church, will let them know
exactly what drug experimentation will do to their bodies.

The evening is for youth aged 13-18, and is being put on by First United
youth minister Alison Wainwright.

Presenters will cover today's prevalent drugs, including cocaine, pot,
ecstasy, alcohol and meth, and dole out some hard facts about drug use.

"We're going to have a specialist in toxicology, Wayne Jeffery, who is a
retired RCMP," Wainwright said.

"He's going to go over the more popular drugs and what happens to your body
if you take it."

"For teens that haven't tried them, or are already using, they can at least
think twice."

There will be information on community resources, and a young adult will
speak about her drug using experience in high school, plus how she stopped
and the life changes that resulted.

"I think it's important for them to know some people do (drugs) but there
are ways to change that lifestyle," Wainwright said.

A crystal meth information video, Death By Jib, will be featured.

Teen Power is set for Friday, May 12, 6:30 to 9 p.m. at First United
Church, 15383 Semiahmoo Ave. Cost is $5 for pizza dinner, please
pre-register at church.
