THOUSANDS OF MARIJUANA PLANTS SEIZED BY POLICE
The Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) seized 8,860 marijuana plants
over the past three weeks in six different farmer's fields.
Sgt. Michael Harvey, a member of the local RCMP detachment, said the
seizures were made because of four days of flyovers that led to
officers spotting the crops.
Three plots were found in South Glengarry, two in North Glengarry and
one in South Stormont.
Harvey said no arrests were made as a result of the seizures, but
intelligence was gathered that could aid future investigations.
The marijuana seizures were a result of collaboration with the OPP
Emergency Response Team, OPP Canine Unit, the Cornwall Integrated
Criminal Intelligence Section and RCMP Air Services.
The CRTF also arrested 32 people, half of whom are from Cornwall, when
they seized contraband tobacco products between Aug. 25 and Sept. 14.
Seven of the seizures took place in South Glengarry and five were made
in the city.
Twenty-nine of the individuals face charges under the federal Excise
Act 2001 and/or the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of a
tobacco product not properly stamped.
The CRTF also seized:
* 21 vehicles
* 5 vessels described as a Ya ma ha Powerboat with a 30HP motor, a
Bombardier Sea-Doo boat, a fishing boat with a 25 HP Mercury Sea Pro
motor, a five-metre Sunray fibreglass boat and a Jet boat with a
150-litre Mercury motor
* 2 camping trailers
* 4 boat trailers
* 22,108 resealable bags and cartons each containing 200 contraband
cigarettes
* 1,110 kilograms of fine cut tobacco contained in 62 garbage
bags
* 104 cartons of PT brand little cigars in various fruit
flavours
* 8,860 marijuana plants If anyone notices suspicious activity, please
contact the CRTF at 613-937-2800 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
