TOWN SAFE ONCE AGAIN

The first quarter crime statistics are in for the town of Vermilion
and once again the town is considered a safe place to live, according
to RCMP Sgt. Dave Neigum.

"There's not much change. It's a very safe community to live in. We
have our problems but they're minor in nature. Overall, when I
compare it to other places this size it's a very safe place to live."

Between the months of January and March there have been 24 traffic
collisions which is down from 55 in the first quarter of last year,
but on track for the total last year of 111.

"[Last year's first quarter number] is possible when you have
slippery roads," said Neigum.

RCMP were involved with a murder in the first degree charge this year
but the incident did not occur in the area.

"That was an assistance. We did some work for another unit that
requested us to assist them with regards to a homicide," said Neigum.

There have been 21 incidents of theft under $5,000 and 11 assaults
which are both average for this time of year said Neigum.

Neigum said drug use does not appear to be a larger problem in
Vermilion than any other town of the same size.

"I know there is some concern about drugs that are being used in our
area schools. A lot of the stuff we've heard so far is common hearsay
through parents and other young persons and that sort of stuff."

Neigum said the RCMP would continue to educate youth and investigate
drug use in the community.

"I brought it up at our community advisory committee and we're
seeking further information on it."

Neigum said the RCMP would work in conjunction with local advocacy
groups, AADAC, schools and youth to investigate drug use in the area.
