DARE DOESN'T WORK
Andrea Tischler's recent letter about the futility of continuing the
twice-failed DARE anti-drug program was on the mark. It is hard to
understand why our otherwise very effective Police Department insists
on continuing a program that many studies have shown to be basically
ineffective. This obdurate adherence to futility is becoming
increasingly difficult to understand. Our police are well-trained to
protect and serve the citizenry in duty assignments where their more
concentrated efforts will produce positive results. If for no other
reason than common sense, administrators will finally have to turn
loose of this DARE program and assign officers to more productive
police work.
In these days when most everyone is struggling to make do with less,
one would think the mayor might see an opening here to save the county
some sorely needed money by eliminating a failed program and putting
these police lecturers into better opportunities for crime prevention.
Instead, let's concentrate on a program that produces the best
results. It's called effective parenting.
