PROTESTERS RESPECT LAW

Re "Guns, drugs scary mix" (April 21): After reading Joe Warmington's
tirade about the pot law protest, I was thinking about the many
accounts of gunfire and shootings in bars reported in the Sun. Oddly,
I have never heard Warmington call for outlawing the legal sale of
alcohol. He says protesters were "thumbing their noses at the law,"
and "protesting without proper permits." Sometimes, if a law is
stupid, out-dated, and widely disobeyed, it needs to be protested,
regardless of the legality of the protest. Most of the people at that
rally have tremendous respect for the law and are trying to change it
to reflect the opinion of society. I applaud the police "hands off"
policy in this case - we waste enough tax money on this nonsense
already. Legalize it, and there will be no more marijuana protests -
but there will still be shootings in bars.

Slotek on legalizing pot, Warmington taking the other side)
