SOCIETY'S STANDARDS
The argument of Steve Chapman's column has the appearance of his
backing up while delivering it. While it is true our republican form
of democratic self-government relies on the compassionate rule of the
majority for all of society, his reasoning is misguided. An "anything
goes" approach by the majority only dilutes the concept of societal
responsibility.
The people of these United States have the responsibility of setting
acceptable standards of conduct and neighborliness. To propose
lowering same is admitting that earlier generations of citizens were
more committed to raising themselves up to a higher level for future
generations than we are.
