MAN FINED, FORCED TO FORFEIT $165,000

A man has been fined, handed a conditional sentence, ordered to
perform community service and forced to forfeit $165,000 US after
failing to declare the funds as he tried to enter B.C. at the
Canada-U.S. border.

Jonathan Darren Smith was sentenced in Surrey Provincial Court on Dec.
9.

On Sept. 16, 2007, Canada Border Services Agency officers working the
Douglas port of entry discovered the undeclared currency in Smith's
vehicle. He had indicated he did not have funds greater than $10,000
Canadian.

The officers seized the $165,000 U.S. under the Proceeds of Crime and
Terrorist Financing Act.

In court, Smith was fined $10,000, given a six-month conditional
sentence including house arrest for the first three months and curfew
for the last three months and ordered to do 40 hours of community service.

The U.S. cash was also forfeited.
