EX-DETECTIVE'S SENTENCING DELAYED
MANSFIELD -- The sentencing of a Richland County sheriff's detective
who admitted lying during a drug trial has been continued until Feb. 4.
Chuck Metcalf, 46, faces up to a year in jail and a $100,000 fine.
He pleaded guilty May 14 in U.S. District Court to one misdemeanor
count of deprivation of rights in a court of law. Metcalf had been
scheduled for sentencing this past Monday.
The charge stems from a 2005 local drug investigation called
Operation Turnaround. Metcalf falsely testified July 14, 2006,
during the trial of Dwayne Nabors, who was charged with conspiring
to distribute cocaine and distributing cocaine for a controlled drug
buy Sept. 20, 2005.
Nabors was not at the buy and did not participate in any manner,
according to court papers. He was acquitted on the conspiracy count
and the jury did not reach a verdict on the second charge.
Metcalf and federal drug agent Lee Lucas worked together in
Operation Turnaround, which led to the arrests of 26 people. Cases
against 23 were thrown out when informant Jerrell Bray admitted he
intentionally framed 17 people during a series of drug buys in Mansfield.
Bray was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Lucas' trial is scheduled
for January.
Sheriff Steve Sheldon previously said he will not discipline Metcalf
until his criminal case is over. Metcalf is scheduled to make
$47,633 in base pay in 2009.
On leave after getting injured this spring during an arrest, Metcalf
was transferred to the patrol division with the March layoff of 10
deputies. Sheldon has since closed the detective bureau.
