REHAB CENTRE DESERVES CHANCE

In a perfect world, there would be no need for rehab
centres.

But we live in a world where some individuals need help. It also goes
without saying that very few people would invite a rehab centre into
their neighbourhood, which makes the current plan by a company called
Hatts Off so emotional.

The business is seeking a special zoning change that would allow it to
open a 10-bed addiction treatment centre called Caverhill Manor.

The good news is that it caters to professional, highly-motivated male
clients. The bad news is that its located across the street from Galt
Collegiate institute, which automatically sends up red flags for most
Cambridge citizens. It's also an area which already houses The Bridges
homeless shelter, several group homes and, according to residents, a
crack house.

Neighbours understandably would fear for the safety of their children,
as well as the property value of their homes.

During a meeting Wednesday night, Hatts Off executive director Gordon
Naylor tried to explain to concerned citizens that the program isn't a
drop-in centre and clients will be supervised out in the community.

These individuals deserve a second chance. What if it was a relative
of yours trying to overcome a drug problem?

Wouldn't you hope the community would at least offer the person a
helping hand?
