POLICE REPORT UPSWING IN CRIME STOPPERS TIPS
Falling tolerance for crime is behind an increase in Crime Stoppers
tips resulting in arrests, according to police.
Coming off the highest number of tips per month in September 2009
resulting in arrests, officials are optimistic this will also be the
most successful year to date with already 150 more tips than last year
with 2,860.
"I firmly believe our city is safer thanks to those that have picked
up the phone or visited the Crime Stoppers website to provide a tip,"
Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm said.
Chisholm said there could be a number of reasons Calagrians are
picking up the phone more but he believes the anonymity it provides
remains the number 1 factor.
"The Crime Stoppers program is laudable as a result of our citizens
who proactively 'un-mute' themselves in the three ways to anonymously
submit crime tips," Crime Stoppers president Roger Monette added.
Tips received this year resulted in approximately $14 million of drugs
being seized, compared to $2 million in the same period last year.
