JUDGE ORDERS JAIL FOR DEALER TO 'DETER' OTHERS
A small-time drug dealer nabbed by undercover police in a dial-a-dope
investigation has been sent to jail for four months for selling $120
worth of crack cocaine and heroin.
Bradley Anderson, 49, of North Vancouver, was handed the prison
sentence Monday by Judge Doug Moss of the North Vancouver provincial
court after pleading guilty to two charges of trafficking.
Crown counsel Peter Whyte had asked the judge for a six-to-nine-month
jail sentence.
Moss said he wanted to send a message to others who might be tempted
to deal drugs.
"We have so many of these cases. People just keep coming back here,"
said Moss in handing down his sentence. "If you know you're going to
go to jail instead of getting a home arrest situation, people might
think about it before getting involved."
Whyte said Anderson was one of half a dozen people connected to the
dial-a-dope business. Undercover police officers bought drugs --
including small amounts of crack cocaine and heroin -- from Anderson
on four occasions between Oct. 11, 2007 and Jan. 16, 2008.
Anderson's lawyer Danny Markowitz asked Moss to consider a conditional
sentence, arguing his client was a drug addict who used to work full
time for CN Rail but whose life had deteriorated to the point he was
living on the street. Markowitz said Anderson's lowest point came when
his 11-year-old son recognized him pushing a buggy containing his
possessions down the street one day while the boy was playing in a
local park.
Markowitz added Anderson has been off drugs for the past 10 months.
Moss said he decided to impose the jail sentence because "I hope it
may in some way deter others of like mind from getting involved" in
the drug trade.
He also placed Anderson on one year probation following his release
from jail.
