SMELL THE MARIJUANA

Re: Students think rights trump responsibilities, May 19.

I have yet to meet one professional working with youths in schools
who thinks students have the right not to be subjected to searches on
school property. Those who naively chatter on about human rights for
everyone, not just adults, need to wake up and smell the marijuana.

The only people to benefit from this policy change are students who
use and sell drugs at our schools. And they know it. Ask the
principals of Ottawa high schools how many charges were laid the last
time police arrived with their drug-sniffing dogs. Many schools have
uncovered this problem.

With the policy change, now those students have free rein. I've done
an informal survey of the high school students I teach and found that
those with high levels of maturity and high moral standards have no
objection whatsoever to being subjected to searches. Why would they?
They have nothing to hide!
