UNREASONABLE ASSUMPTION

In his July 26 column "When rights steer us wrong," Alan Shanoff
writes: "I think most reasonable people would agree that even guilty
people should go free if their Charter rights have been violated in
an extreme manner." I guess I don't fit with "most." Guilty people
should be punished accordingly. If their rights have been violated in
an extreme manner, those violating their rights should also be
punished. Perhaps their mistreatment should be taken into account
when sentencing (as some punishment already suffered), but it
shouldn't absolve them of their sins. "Two wrongs don't make a right"
should apply to the criminal justice system as well.
