AFGHAN MISSION HELPS ELIMINATE OPIUM TRADE

Re: "Canada should be in Darfur," letter, May 26.

The letter arguing Canada should not be in Afghanistan asked "why are
we fighting the U.S. war on drugs as well, destroying the opium
fields in Afghanistan that represent one of the few means of economic
survival in that ruined economy."

Opium and its derivative heroin are two of the most addictive drugs
known to man. These drugs are not just sold in the U.S., but all over
the world, creating misery. They are ruining Canadian lives and
costing many millions of taxpayers' dollars.

Drugs impact all our lives in one way or another and all of us should
be contributing to the eradication of this dreadful scourge, so
perhaps Canada is doing the most good by being in Afghanistan.

M.P. Griffin,

Saanich.
