PROBLEM NOT YET LAID TO BED
The Ministry of Health Services funds about 200 detox beds in B.C. --
80 or so of them within Vancouver Coastal Health. It funds 2,186
detox, treatment and addictions supportive-housing beds in total.
The ministry reports the B.C. government has increased mental-health
and addictions budgets by 35 per cent since 2001 to $1.2 billion in
2007-08 and increased addictions beds 150 per cent since 2003. In May
2008, the federal government added 20 detox beds for women in the
Roosevelt Hotel and last November gave Vancouver's drug court $200,000
to create 34 temporary drug-treatment spaces.
