POLICE ACCUSED OF BACKING DRUG PEDDLERS

The unprecedented flourishing of the business of drug trafficking and
peddling in Nigeria has been blamed on the undue cooperation and
support allegedly given to drug barons by some unscrupulous police
officers in the country.

According to a Psychiatrist, Dr Olafemwa Popoola, this was one of the
factors militating against drug war in the country.

Popoola, stated this, during the year 2009 United Nations
International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking,
organised by the Ekiti State Chapter of the National Drug Law
Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)

He expressed worry about how the Police, who ought to bring the
sellers and Consumers of Indian Hemp, to book, were being allegedly
bribed, so that they could have a free day in the illicit business,
saying this portends danger for the future of the country

According to Popoola, "I am not happy with the way Police are being
bribed to spare the sellers and consumers of some of these dangerous
weeds. Police to take bribe and protect them from prosecution," he
said.

Speaking professionally on the danger inherent in Indian hemp and
other dangerous drugs, Popoola revealed that whoever that is addicted
to these dangerous drugs would not escape insanity either at tender or
old age.

Also, the State Commander of the NDLEA, Prince Ben Ikani, called on
all stakeholders to join hands with the Agency to reduce the menace of
drug abuse and trafficking in Nigerian.
