BUREAUCRATIC PLUNDER
Re: Edward Greenspan's "crapshoot seizure" column. ("Proof goes poof -- Police can seize
cash, property without charges or convictions," June 8.)
What is it about the Canadian democratic mentality that moves
officialdom to the most draconian attacks on ordinary Canadians? Legal
minds formerly noted for championing the rights (including the
property rights) of the poorest of us score a Supreme Court seat and
suddenly pass a bureaucratic plunder law. Police can seize your
property if they don't like your attitude or aftershave. No recourse.
No complaining. No resistance allowed. Does "due process" somehow
magically become offensive if one obtains a civil-service position? Or
is this just a weaselly new secret tax-grab that saves accounting-fees
while remaining out of sight of the media? My thanks to Greenspan for
bringing this to our attention. I should like to hear from my MP, MLA,
and the PM himself on why they suppose this despotic initiative to be
such a clever idea.

(It's a powerful crimefighting measure that must be wielded with
extreme caution.)
