DRUG WAR TERROR ESCALATES IN MEXICO
The governor of one of Mexico's most violent border states said that
gunmen attacked a convoy of vehicles he was traveling in, killing one
of his bodyguards and wounding two other agents. Chihuahua Gov. Jose
Reyes Baeza said the incident occurred Sunday in the state capital.
Hundreds have been killed in the state, which borders Texas and New
Mexico, as drug cartels battle each other for supremacy and lash out
at a government crackdown on narcotics smuggling.
The attack came two days after the police chief of Ciudad Juarez, the
state's biggest city, bowed to gang demands to resign after they
threatened to kill at least one of his officers every 48 hours. Signs
appeared around the city applauding the resignation of Roberto Orduna.
More than 6,000 people were killed in drug-related violence in Mexico
last year.
