UNDERCOVER POLICE SHOOTING IN DAVIE LEAVES ONE DEAD

A Police-Involved Shooting Outside a Busy Davie Home Depot Leaves One
Person Dead

One person was shot and killed late Friday at a Davie Home Depot in an
undercover police drug investigation.

The shooting occurred about 8 p.m. in the parking lot of the giant
home improvement store at 2300 S. University Dr. in the Tower Shops, a
busy strip mall with dozens of popular retail stores on University
Drive, just south of Interstate 595.

Federal DEA agents had been working a cocaine investigation, said
Jeannnette Moran, spokeswoman for the DEA.

The investigation had been "ongoing for several weeks. That
culminated this evening," Moran said.

Two other people were taken into custody at the scene.

The DEA was a part of a task force with several other agencies, Moran
said.

Moran provided little else on the shooting and no information on the
dead suspect.

The store is on the south end of the mall. A Costco is on the north
end across the street.

When the shooting occurred, hundreds of spectators had gathered in the
massive parking lot, just west of the DSW shoe warehouse for a weekly
car show, organized by the Florida Street Rod Club. People were
milling around for the car event, which has been held in the parking
lot for the past 15 years.

Because a DJ was playing music and car enthusiasts were revving their
engines, many spectators did not know what was happening until they
saw police cars converging on the area.

Raymond Perez, 61, of Cooper City was there showing off his 1967 light
purple Chevy Nova, when he saw a stream of police cars head toward The
Home Depot.

"I saw one or two cars, then more with lights, then more with lights.
I knew something was going on. It seems like it's every day now."

Danny Dieguez, 14, of Pembroke Pines, said he heard about five to
seven gunshots. Then he saw people rushing toward The Home Depot,
following by police officers.

"They came from every direction, blocking off every street they
could," the teen said. "I thought a bunch of people got shot."
