GOVERNMENT DRUGS?

I'm disappointed to hear the usual knee-jerk reaction from local
mayors to the recent spat of gangland violence. As usual I'm hearing
about deterrence and consequences. If we really want deterrence then
how about taking the profit motive away from these gangs. They are,
after all, fighting for turf in the illegal drug market.

Until the government takes over distribution of all drugs, this cycle
of violence will continue. I realize that the idea of legal drugs is a
hard idea for many to swallow. We have had, after all, prohibition for
many generations.

But, if we are to seriously eradicate violence over drug turf, we must
take a long and serious look at lifting prohibition.

I would prefer to see drug profits going to programs for addicts than
to see these thugs continue buying SUV's and guns. And as it is our
kids can obtain cocaine, meth or ecstasy much easier than they can a
six-pack of beer. It obvious that our approach has been all wrong.
