POLICE SEIZE HOUSE AFTER BUSTING GROW-OP

Delta police have seized more than just marijuana after busting a
Ladner grow-op.

In addition to confiscating 423 plants valued at about $266,000, the
department announced this week it has now restrained the home of the
two accused as offence-related property under the Controlled Drug and
Substance Act.

"The offence related property targets the 'tools and instruments'
individuals use to commit their crimes," said Delta police
spokesperson Const. Sharlene Brooks. "If convicted, Crown counsel will
seek forfeiture of the house as offence-related property."

Brooks said it is the first time the department has seized a residence
as offence-related property as homes used in grow-ops are usually rented.

In order to seize a house, the homeowner must be one of the accused.
The homeowner can still reside in the home while the case is before
the courts, Brooks said, however the Seized Property Management
Directorate is now managing it.

Delta police officers raided the house in the 5400-block of 44th
Avenue last November.

In addition to the marijuana plants in various stages of growth,
police officers also seized approximately $10,000 in growing equipment.

Two Delta residents, Sean Michael Lenihan, 32, and Alena Jane Shason,
23, were arrested and charged with production of a controlled
substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Both made their first court appearance in early January and are
scheduled to appear again on March 4.
