MCCARTHY ERA REVISITED
Re: "Police drug warrant signs anger civil liberties group," (Jan. 16).
Ever notice how the modern drug war looks a lot like the rabid paranoia
and anti-communism zeal of the McCarthy era? Or the Spanish Inquisition,
or the Salem Witch Trails? The authorities demand fealty and are willing
to use fear, rumours, and intimidation to get it. This is a disgusting day
for Canada, but it is not the least bit surprising. A police state is
inevitable.
