Editor's note: The Times received many letters concerning the City
Council resolution including language about discussing legalization
of drugs. Some of these were written before the resolution veto was upheld.
BACKS COUNCIL
Beto O'Rourke and the rest of the City Council hit the nail right on
the head. Like the prohibition against liquor, which made tons of
money for the illegal distributors, it's likewise for drug dealers
both on the American and Mexico side.
Legalize it, tax it and control it by the feds. Prohibit the sale of
it to minors, as defined by law.
Also, why doesn't the U.S. take responsibility for being the largest
consumers of these illicit drugs? The only ones making money are the
cartels and the dealers on this side (U.S.).
If you legalize it, the only ones making money will be the U.S.
government, and it will give relief to the taxpayers.
If all of this takes effect, it will wipe out supply and demand for
cartels and drug dealers.
And to the people who are so up in arms against this proposal because
of minors: Where is your parental responsibility?
Where is the consumer's personal responsibility and common sense?
As Mr. Nelson states in your Sunday opinion column, "The only way to
go is to legalize drugs." And this is from a former federal officer.
The war against drugs, what a joke.
