Editor's note: The Times received many letters concerning the City
Council resolution including language about discussing legalization
of drugs. Some of these were written before the resolution veto was upheld.

OVERRIDE VETO

Dear City Council members, thank you for having the courage to ask
for dialogue on how to improve our government.

The people who have written the Times advocating
legalization/decriminalization, particularly of marijuana, are exactly correct.

The simple understanding that we've been losing the "drug war" for 40
years should speak for itself.

The money from drug empires continues to be laundered though our
banks, enriching them and the drug lords they support. Our prisons
overflow at great expense in consequence.

Override Mayor Cook's short-sighted veto, and give him the boot come
election time.
