HISTORICAL SOCIETY LOOKS AT ECLECTIC PAST

Before the Westminster Mall was built, the site was home to an
interesting chapter in New Westminster's history.

The Hollywood Hospital, which occupied most of the site, was a
private facility mainly known as an alcoholic treatment centre. But
the medical staff also used the drug LSD as a treatment for alcoholism.

When the use of the drug became out of favour, government funding for
the hospital dried up. In 1975 the land was sold and the mall was
built in its place within a year.

These and other stories will be told at this month's New Westminster
Historical Society's evening, Jan. 21 in the New Westminster Public
Library auditorium.

The historical society will discuss a number of photos from the past,
including the Hollywood Hospital and other perspectives of the city.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. It's free and everyone is welcome.
