HOGANSBURG MAN TRIED TO SMUGGLE $42,000 IN CANADIAN: U.S. CUSTOMS
CHAMPLAIN - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced
Saturday the arrest of a U. S. citizen who attempted to smuggle
$34,639 into the United States.
According to CBP officers, he was encountered as he applied for
admission into the United States at the Champlain port of entry.
During the primary inspection, CBP officers say, he claimed that he
was en route to Florida on vacation. Further questioning raised the
suspicion of CBP officers and he was subsequently referred to CBP for
a secondary enforcement exam.
He advised the CBP officers that he was not exporting any merchandise
into the United States and was in possession of $7,000 Canadian dollars.
At that time, CBP officers explained in detail, the currency reporting
requirements. CBP officers next preformed a physical inspection and
discovered a total of $35,000 unreported Canadian dollars hidden in
his shoes.
CBP officers seized a total of $42,000 Canadian dollars, which is
equivalent to $34,639 U. S. dollars.
The man was arrested and charged with bulk currency smuggling, and
turned over to agents from Immigration and customs enforcement for
further investigation and prosecution by the United States Attorney's
Office, Northern District of New York.
A traveler with an amount exceeding $10,000, in U.S. or Canadian
funds, need to file a report with CDP, according to border officials.
