POLICE ISSUE DRUGS ALERT

Police In Scarborough Say Drugs Will Not Be Tolerated In
Town.

The warning follows a major search operation at the weekend, which
used a "passive drugs dog" and saw 18 people searched in pubs and
clubs in St Nicholas Street and St Thomas Street.

The operation, carried out jointly by the police, Scarborough Council
and local Security Industry Authority, in co-operation with the town's
licensees, led to two people being warned for cannabis possession.

Acting Insp Graeme Kynman, of Scarborough Police, who led the
operation, said: "Scarborough has a thriving nightlife, occasionally
spoiled by the anti-social and violent behaviour of a small minority.
Often those responsible are affected by drink and drugs.

"We want people to enjoy the town and have a great time and not have
their evening spoiled by a minority of law-breakers.

"The weekend's operation was designed to help prevent such incidents
occurring in the first place and to send out a strong warning to
anybody contemplating drug abuse in our town, that it will not be
tolerated and anyone found with illegal drugs will face the full force
of the law.

"We also recognise the harm that drugs misuse causes to communities,
individuals and their families. Wherever possible we will work with
those individuals that come to our notice to overcome their drug
related problems and live healthy and crime-free lives. We will
continue to provide access routes into treatment and other effective
interventions.

"We will continue to integrate prevention, education and harm
minimisation into our own enforcement responsibilities."
