MORE WREXHAM YOUNGSTERS TURNING TO COCAINE ABUSE

The manager of a Wrexham-based drug and alcohol helpline has warned that
more and more young people are taking cocaine.

Janet Roberts, helpline services manager for DAN 24/7 also said that those
taking drugs were getting younger and younger.

The Welsh Assembly Government has launched a campaign to raise awareness
of substance and alcohol misuse by producing posters, leaflets and other
promotional materials.

Ms Roberts said: "There is evidence indicating that cocaine use has
increased considerably in the past 10 years. One of our main concerns is
that young people, particularly those aged 20 to 24 years, report using
cocaine more than any other age group.

"It is important we encourage people to think about their lifestyle choices."

Research by national drug agency Drugscope has found that young people are
more likely to use cocaine alongside other drugs such as alcohol and
cannabis.

DAN 24/7 is a national, confidential service providing 24-hour advice to
drug and alcohol users and anyone wanting information on substance misuse.

Delivered by Cais Ltd, a North Wales-based provider of substance misuse
services, in partnership with the Assembly, the helpline will allow people
to access local treatment and support services.

Callers can also obtain advice on reducing the risks associated with
substance misuse or discuss issues with the service's specialist staff.

The helpline number is 0800 6 33 55 88 and all calls from land lines will
be free, although some mobile phone networks may charge.

Mike Hardy, criminal justice policy advisor on substance misuse at the
Welsh Assembly Government, said: "It is at this time of year that people
can be excessive in many areas and drink and drugs are not excluded from
this.

"Therefore the DAN 24/7 Helpline is important for anybody wanting some
free and confidential advice and support."
