DRUG COP 'HAD TO' SNORT COKE

BARRIE -- An undercover OPP officer who infiltrated the Hells Angels
crack-cocaine trade was forced to snort cocaine by the suspicious
bikers and eventually became addicted to drugs, a defence lawyer
charged yesterday.

"It was an extremely dangerous life," lawyer Henry Black said at the
sentencing hearing for OPP Det. Const. Scott Duguid.

Duguid, 35, of Phelpston, pleaded guilty to breach of trust after he
was caught supplying the co-ordinates of marijuana fields to a crook
who harvested the crop before police moved in.

During the hearing, Black described the bizarre world in which
Duguid lived undercover in Barrie and played a stranger to his own
wife and children, who lived nearby.

Using two covers -- one, a seller of high-end stolen clothing, the
other, a seller of stolen cars to Saudi Arabia --Duguid worked 100
hours a week, infiltrating the Hells Angels and hanging out in
Barrie bars to infiltrate the Jamaican crack trade, Black said.

"This was an extremely difficult and dangerous task because of who
he was dealing with," Black said.

Black told the court of one incident in which a gun-toting Hells
Angels member laid out a line of cocaine on the table and pointed to Duguid.

Told 'He Would Be Fine'

"He had to take these drugs," Black said. "If these guys suspect you
are a narc, they will shoot you with a gun and dump your body."

Duguid, who worked alone and suffered from ulcers, finally went to
his OPP supervisors and asked for help.

"They told him they'd never been this close to the Hells Angels
before. They told him he would be fine," Black said.

Duguid gave the co-ordinates of the marijuana fields to Jody Proctor
because he was grooming him as an informant and had to help Proctor
get out of debt, Black said.
