PROHIBITION CREATES MORE PROBLEMS THAN SOLUTIONS

The "gateway theory" is just another tired example of the post-hoc
fallacy (Letters, Nov. 26). Research has repeatedly shown that "there
is no conclusive evidence that the drug effects of marijuana are
causally linked to the subsequent abuse of other illicit drugs."

Very few cannabis advocates would argue with the writer's observations
concerning alcohol and tobacco. Most of us have lost someone to the
effects of one of those poisons. The bigger issue to consider is
whether a prohibition solves or creates problems. The attempt to
outlaw alcohol didn't stop people from drinking; it did build criminal
empires.

This current prohibition also interferes with legitimate medical
patients in their need to acquire medicine. Listen to your friends and
neighbors tell their stories by visiting the MCCFDIA channel on
YouTube. As a licensed medical marijuana patient, I do not want some
chaotic lack of regulation. I ask for clarity and compassion in the
laws, consistency and fairness in the enforcement, and, above all,
safe access to the medicine my doctor and this state has licensed me
to use.
