WILL OF THE PEOPLE

Hawaii Island voters have thoughtfully and wisely voted in support of
lowest law enforcement priority for cannabis (marijuana) offenses
because they are tired of 35 years of helicopters flying over homes,
terrorizing families and children, and wasting of precious taxpayers'
dollars on a failed policy. Citizens have clearly spoken and their
voice now needs to be heard by government agencies and our elected
representatives.

However, it is discouraging that the police and prosecutors would
attempt to block the new ordinance. These are public employees that we
pay to serve and protect, and we are asking them to carry out the
people's will. If they are not willing to do that, they must be made
accountable. That includes the possibility of making some job changes.

Accomplishing this will require citizens to be vigilant and involved.
During this month and in December, citizens should attend and at the
three public hearings and county Police Commission meetings to
consider the applicants for a new police chief. We want the next
police chief to respect and enforce lowest priority for cannabis
offenses. Comments will be taken at 5 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Hilo Aupuni
Center conference room.

Be there or beware.
