SANTA CRUZ CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE MOLYNEUX WANTS TO IMPROVE PUBLIC,
PATIENT SAFETY
SANTA CRUZ -- City Council candidate Lisa Molyneux is best known for
opening her medical marijuana shop in Harvey West in 2005.
Now, the recent transplant from Boulder Creek is seeking a seat in
local government.
Molyneux did not return repeated calls for comment for this story,
but according to her statement on the voter's pamphlet, Molyneux said
she would work to increase "public and bicycle safety," provide
affordable education and increase the safety of medical cannabis
patients in town.
Molyneux, a former broadcast engineer with Fox New Sports in Los
Angeles, left her job to open Greenway Compassionate Relief Inc. in
Harvey West in 2005.
She began using medical marijuana in 1997, to help ease nausea caused
by radiation treatment, and to stimulate a diminished appetite,
according to Sentinel reports. She opened her shop after wondering
why she continued to drive from Santa Cruz County to Oakland for her
medication.
Molyneux's dispensary was the first legal business of its kind in
Santa Cruz, a city passionate to the cause.
At first the dispensary faced an uncertain future, as state and local
laws allowing marijuana use for medicinal reasons defy federal law.
But three years later, the shop is still in business.
Greenway is limited to buying and selling the drug, and patients are
not allowed to consume marijuana on site. Plants are not sold there.
