Feds Seize Hidden $5.6 Million
EL PASO, Texas (AP) Federal agents have seized $5.6 million dollars in
possible drug money in El Paso, Texas.
U.S. Customs agents say they found the money hidden last week in the false
ceiling of a tractortrailer trying to cross into Mexico. It's one of the
largest seizures of cash headed across the border.
Authorities are trying to determine the money's source and intended
recipient.
The rig's driver was not detained. Possession of cash, even in large amounts,
is not a crime. And authorities say they usually can't detain a person unless
they can prove he was knowingly moving the cash.
One expert is predicting drug lords are likely to seek retribution for such a
significant cash loss. ``There will be bodies,'' he says.
