China Arrests 16,000 Drug Addicts
BEIJING (AP) Police arrested more than 16,000 drug addicts in the southern
province of Guangdong and seized 165 pounds of heroin during an anticrime
sweep, a newspaper reported Monday.
Police also seized 480 pounds of the amphetamine ``ice'' and more than 20,000
pills of the drug ``ecstasy'' during the April 1May 15 crackdown, the China
Business Times reported.
It said more than 1,300 addicts were sent to drug rehabilitation camps, while
more than 13,000 others were ordered to give up drugs on their own.
The report gave no other details.
