A ministry statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency said the man,
Abdulrahman Khan Masem, was held as he tried to ``smuggle a quantity of
heroin into the kingdom and investigation resulted in his conviction.''
The execution in the capital Riyadh raised to 73 the number of convicted
criminals beheaded in the conservative Islamic kingdom so far this year. A
total of 68 were beheaded in 1996.
Saudi Arabia applies Islamic sharia law by publicly beheading convicted
murderers, rapists, drug traffickers and other criminals.
