Sen. Jesse Helms has branded retired Massachusetts Gov. William Weld
as a soft-on-drugs pariah because Weld supports medical marijuana and
needle exchange -- positions incommensurate with Helms' idea of an
ambassador to Mexico.
Yet, for decades, Helms has been a tireless ambassador for North
Carolina's tobacco industry, the drug cartel whose products cause 40
times more American deaths each year than all illegal drugs combined.
