D.A.R.E. GOLF CLASSIC ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO BE DRUG FREE
The 2nd annual D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Golf Classic
was another huge success, making it possible for the Cranbrook RCMP
and Drug Awareness Service to continue to encourage high school
students to live drug free.
The Classic, held at the St. Eugene's Mission Resort on June 6 raised
money for a $1400 scholarship for a local grade 12 student who
exemplified skills consistent with the D.A.R.E. program. An additional
$1500 was also raised which will ensure future scholarships for local
students.
This year's recipient was Jennifer Kaun who plans to further her
studies to become a pharmacist.
The scholarship was first implemented last year and six applications
were received from drug free students. That number rose to 18
applications this year, who showed pride in their positive drug-free
lifestyle.
"It is important to recognize students, not only for their academic
achievements, but also because of the positive choices they make, like
remaining drug and violence free," said Cst. McNeil, Cranbrook RCMP.
"These skills are consistent with what D.A.R.E. exemplifies and teaches."
Applicants were required to submit an essay. In Kaun's essay she said
"The use of drugs would hurt my relationship with the people I love.
It is important to me that my family trusts and respects me. The use
of drugs would destroy that trust and respect. Using drugs is a choice
with known consequences and to me the consequences are too great even
to consider drug use."
According to Cst. McNeil, the success of this tournament was due to
phenomenal community support.
"A special thank you to St. Eugene's Mission Resort for hosting the
event. The list of hole-in-one sponsors, hole sponsors and prize
sponsors shows the tremendous support of this endeavor. We hope next
year's event will be as successful," said Cst. McNeil.
"Congratulations to Jennifer Kaun on making positive alternative
choices, good luck in your post secondary education."
