Teenage drug courier jailed for nine years
By Maurice Weaver
A TEENAGER was jailed for nine years yesterday for trying to smuggle
cocaine valued at £269,000 through Heathrow airport.
Stafford Crown Court was told that 6.6lb of the drug was found in
19yearold Tania Smith's suitcase after she left a flight from Jamaica.
Smith, unemployed, from Normanton, Derbyshire, admitted smuggling cocaine
and possessing cannabis with intent to supply.
Kristina Montgomery, defending, said Smith had left home at 15 and became
hooked on heroin and crack cocaine. She owed money to her dealer and was
persuaded to act as a drugs carrier.
