MEXICO CITY, Aug 11 (Reuter) Mexican authorities seized more than a ton of
cocaine from a German ship and detained 14 foreign crewmen including seven
Germans for questioning, the government said on Monday.

The Attorney General's Office said police and military personnel raided the
Germanflagged container ship near the west coast port of Manzanillo on
Saturday and found drugs stashed in boxes of books.

It said the haul of 1.145 tons of cocaine was one of the biggest this year in
Mexico.

The Attorney General's Office said in a statement that the ship had travelled
from the Colombian port of Buenaventura to Manzanillo.

The crew of the TMM Jalisco consisted of seven Germans, two Poles and five
Philippines nationals.

Mexican transportation company, Transportacion Maritima Mexicana, S.A. (TMM)
said in a statement it regretted that one of its chartered ships was used to
transport drugs.

TMM added that it would cooperate fully with authorities.

The ship is registered in the German port of Leer and owned by the Atlas
Trampship Reederei company, according to Lloyd's Register of Ships.
