LA Cops to Carry Assault Rifles

California Gov. Pete Wilson has announced that Los Angeles police
officers will be armed with assault rifles to ensure they can equal the
firepower of the criminals they face. Wilson says the Pentagon is
providing 600 U.S. Army surplus M16s to Los Angeles cops in the wake of
a televised shootout with heavily armed bank robbers on Feb. 28. The
rifles will be issued to sergeants in the field, who will use them at
their discretion. Wilson said, ``Never, ever again do I want to see
officers from the Los Angeles Police Department outgunned.''
