Dutch to supply longterm addicts with heroin
Amsterdam, Netherlands After months of wrangling, Dutch lawmakers have
approved a plan to supply longterm addicts with free heroin. The
threemonth experiment, which will involve 50 addicts, aims to improve
their health and curb drugrelated crimes. It will begin next March and may
be expanded to include 750 addicts if researchers deem it a success.
Parliament approved the program Wednesday night after months of debate.
While the politicians bickered, one pastor in Rotterdam took matters into
his own hands and started to help addicts buy cheap heroin from local
dealers. However, after the warnings from the Rotterdam prosecutor's office
this week, the Rev. Hans Visser agreed to stop.
