Officials of U.S.'Mexico seek to fight drug trade

Officials of the United States and Mexico agreed Friday on the temporary
extradition of criminals between the two countries as part of a coordinated
fight against the illegal drug trade.

"This matter was causing much tension because each country wanted to try
criminals according to their own laws," Mexico's foreign minister, Jose
Angel Gurria, said after a twoday meeting in Washington.

White House drug czar Barry McCaffrey said the officials also discussed
drug interdiction, the eradication of marijuana and poppy plantations and
ways to stop money laundering.

"We act as an engine sucking illegal drugs into the United States,"
McCaffrey said of Americans' demand for narcotics.
