Police trod upon rights
Again, we see blatant abuse of police power reported on the front page of
the Star (`` Erroneous SWAT raid terrorizes 10 in home '' Oct. 21).
Why is it that a drug task force, in the execution of a search warrant
allegedly supported by probable cause, wants to force its way into a home
while wearing masks. Not only was it the wrong home, causing undue concern
to its occupants, but the police used tactics once attributed to the KGB.
Why must our police be masked? What and why are they hiding? If given the
excuse that these are ``undercover'' personnel whose identity, if revealed,
would pose a risk, I say send in others who can face those they accuse
without hiding.
I don't want masked police personnel invading my home, stopping me on the
highway, or in any other manner violating my constitutional rights.
It is time lawabiding citizens say ``enough!'' of giving free rein to
governmental entities who themselves turn up their noses at the law and our
rights under the Constitution to be free from unlawful search and seizure.
I condemn the use of illicit drugs, drunken driving and all other criminal
activity. But I live in greater fear that I will be deprived of the freedom
I so greatly value.
