Drugs Down Under:
Prime Minister John Howard has launched a $61 million campaign to combat
illegal drugs with about half the funds earmarked to curb the flood of
narcotics entering Australia. Howard said most of the money would be spent
to create more effective interception techniques, including the creation of
54 extra federal police positions and a permanent police presence on
Thursday island, in the Torres Strait north of Australia.
