BOGOTA (Reuters) Two of Britain's top antidrug officials will visit
Colombia, the world's leading cocaine producer and a major player in the
heroin market, on a twoday factfinding mission starting Thursday.
Diplomatic sources said International Drugs Coordinator Patrick Nixon and
Martin Raven, head of the Drugs and International Crime Unit, both of the
Foreign Office, would meet Foreign Minister Maria Emma Mejia and Justice
Minister Almabeatriz Rengifo.
They are also due to hold talks with National Police chief Gen. Rosso Jose
Serrano and watch the aerial spraying with herbicide of illicit plantations
of coca plants and opium poppies.
Colombia is responsible for about 80 percent of the world's cocaine supply,
according to U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration figures, and now provides
almost twothirds of the heroin consumed in the United States.
