AT 82, PASSAIC MAN IS BUSTED AGAIN
By Timothy D. May, Staff Writer
PASSAIC One of the oldest people ever arrested on drug charges in the
county has added to his criminal distinction by being arrested again on
drug charges, police said.
Cornelius Lane, 82, of Passaic Street was being held in the Passaic County
Jail on Monday on $50,000 bail, police said.
Lane was among three people arrested on drug charges Nov. 21, but police
announced the arrest only Monday. Lane was charged with possession and
distribution of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school, police said. Details
of the arrest were not immediately available Monday.
Lane's roommate declined to comment Monday.
Also arrested Nov. 21 were Yury Rivadenieria, 36, of Lodi, and Tempie
Jones, 25, of Third Street, Passaic, police said. Each was charged with
possession of cocaine and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
Lane was arrested in 1993 and charged with possession of 6 grams of cocaine
and possession with intent to distribute. Information on the disposition of
those cases was unavailable Monday evening.
Also on Monday, police said, a 56yearold city resident who temporarily
escaped arrest by jumping out of a secondstory window was caught and
charged with cocaine distribution and hindering apprehension.
John Fields, known on the street as "Peter Rabbit," had been on the run for
11 days, since police, acting on a narcotics arrest warrant, went to his
Passaic Street residence. Fields jumped out of a secondstory window and
fled, eluding police until Monday.
"I asked him, 'At your age, how'd you jump out of that window?' " said
Detective Eduardo Dehais. "And he said, 'That's why they call me Peter
Rabbit.' "
Fields was employed by a local bail bonds agency, Dehais said.
Investigators with the FBI's fugitive task force assisted with the arrest,
Dehais said.
