MAN ACCUSED OF ASKING OFFICER TO GET HIM POT

Waukesha -- A driver suspected of being intoxicated asked a police officer
whether she could help get him any marijuana, court documents filed Monday
allege.

The driver, Steven D. Reetz, 30, of Waukesha, asked Elm Grove Police
Officer Karie Schenkenberg "if (she) knew where he could score some
marijuana," a criminal complaint alleges.

Reetz had two open bottles of vodka in his car and asked for drugs after
giving the officer his name and address, the complaint says.

Reetz was charged Monday with his third drunken-driving offense and was
released on a signature bond. Waukesha County Court Commissioner Gerald
Janis ordered him to maintain absolute sobriety while his charge proceeds
in court.

Reetz, who told Janis he was unemployed and living with his parents, could
not be reached for comment at their Waukesha home Monday.

If convicted of the charge, Reetz would face a maximum penalty of one year
in jail and a three-year revocation of his driver's license.

According to the criminal complaint:

Elm Grove police were called to a two-car accident at 2:12 p.m. Saturday on
Pilgrim Parkway at Watertown Plank Road.

Schenkenberg approached Reetz, who was sitting in his car with the engine
running, and asked him what had happened. He did not respond. When she
yelled the same question, he still did not answer and stared forward.

When she put her hand on his shoulder, he turned around and appeared
"confused and lethargic" when she asked to see his driver's license. He did
not produce a license but gave his name and address.

He then asked in a slurred voice whether she knew how he could obtain some
marijuana.

Reetz could not perform the field sobriety tests and submitted to a blood
test to determine his blood-alcohol level. Results were not available
Monday.

Reetz has two prior convictions for drunken driving, in September and July
of 1995.
